Benjamin Jay Thomas has spent 25 years making music that asks the deepest questions he knows how to ask — and finding, slowly, that the answers were never as far away as he thought.

Originally from Chicago, Thomas built the first chapter of his career as an indie folk singer-songwriter with roots in progressive faith communities, releasing a string of albums — beginning with Grace Will Lead in 2000 — that found him touring churches, listening rooms, and living rooms across the country. Artists like Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, and The National shaped his sonic world: intimate, layered, emotionally literate, and unafraid of the sacred.

A move to Southern California in 2016 — and later to the Cascade mountain town of Leavenworth, WA in 2020 — marked a deepening shift. His 2019 album The Way Up documented a season of spiritual deconstruction, the honest reckoning of a faith expanding beyond its former containers. What emerged on the other side was not the absence of the sacred, but a more spacious version of it: the divine located inside human creativity itself, in the earth, in relationship, in the act of making something true.

Behind Your Eyes, The Stars Are Born (2026) is the arrival point of that journey — his eighth full-length album, five years in the making, and his most sonically adventurous and joy-filled work yet. Blending indie folk roots with the warmth and lift of indie pop, the album is a celebration of original human goodness and the seed of creativity alive in every person.

Alongside his recordings, Thomas has become a sought-after producer, song coach, and educator. He has collaborated with artists across the country and around the world — producing dozens of songs and several full albums, and developing a reputation for creating recordings that feel genuinely human. In early 2026 he led The Song Within, a six-week online course in heart-centered songwriting as spiritual practice. That work is now centered in Bring Forth, a Leavenworth-based nonprofit he founded in 2025 around a simple belief: that every person carries songs worth hearing.

As a live artist, Thomas has become known as a curator of transformative experiences. He creates Guided Concerts — immersive gatherings weaving music, poetry, silence, and communal singing — and leads workshops on songwriting as a spiritual practice. He co-founded Illuminate the Night, a sold-out annual solstice celebration at Icicle Creek Center for the Arts. As a member of Shine Song Collective, he has led workshops and performed at Harvard Divinity School's Conference for Arts and Spirituality. He has also performed at Imagine Festival and Conscious Growth Convergence alongside fellow artists Hernan Savastano and Nora B. Heath.

"Little by little, we're turning into starlight."

Behind Your Eyes, The Stars Are Born is the album Benjamin Jay Thomas's inner child always wanted to make - a celebration of the seed of divine creativity at the center of every living being. In the process of making this record, these songs taught him about his own life, his most meaningful relationships, his inner impulse to create, to see, to be seen, and the power of truly witnessing one another.

"For most of my career I've lived in the quiet, bearded-guy indie folk camp… Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Iron & Wine territory… and I love that world deeply," says Thomas. "But my soul kept pulling me toward something more high-energy, more joyful, more pop-leaning. I gave up trying to be cool a few years back and it opened something up. Eight albums in, and at this point in my life, I find I can say things more directly. These songs are my fullest attempt yet to say out loud that our capacity to imagine and dream and create is what makes us alive and human — that the seed of inspiration inside every person is not just an intellectual, metaphorical idea. I'm just deeply aware of how much that matters right now."

Eight albums in, this one closes a longer arc for Thomas… an ancient faith made his own, then taken apart, and now found again, this time inside the people around him rather than the structures that first handed it to him. It's less about arriving somewhere new than about learning to dream up a world of our own… one where the divine was never somewhere else to begin with.

"I grew up believing God lived somewhere else... in a building, in a book, behind a pulpit," says Thomas. "I spent a long stretch of my life taking that apart, piece by piece, and I don't regret a minute of it. But this record isn't a deconstruction record. It's what came after. I look at my neighbors now and I mean it when the song says 'you my new church.' I look at a stranger and I actually believe the divine is in there, not as metaphor. "The wisdom is you" isn't a slogan to me anymore... it's just true. "All of life is sacred" used to be a nice idea I sang. Now it's a fact I've lived into."

The record is built in two halves, and the deeper Thomas got into finishing it, the clearer that architecture became. Side A is Solar... lighter, brighter, more upbeat, songs that live more in the head, reaching for structure and meaning and a world of our own making. Side B is Lunar… inward, heart-led, more spacious, carrying a strong current of the divine feminine, with Thomas surrounded by more female voices than on any record he's made. Head to heart. Making to receiving. Doing to being.

"I didn't set out to build the album this way… it revealed itself to me as I got further into it," says Thomas. "Side A is Solar. It's more masculine energy, not male... the doing, the building, the daylight world of trying to make meaning out of your life. Side B is Lunar. Feminine energy, not female… more inward, more heart, more night. The whole record is really about the marriage of those two things inside me. Years of doing my own inner work, healing masculine and feminine energy in myself, learning that you need both to actually create something whole. Side A wakes you up. Side B brings you home."

This is music about waking up inside your own life, recovering your imagination, and coming back home to yourself.

The Guided Concert Experience

Benjamin Jay Thomas has spent 25 years learning how to turn a room full of strangers into a community... and the Guided Concert is the fullest expression of that practice.

Rather than a performance watched from a distance, this is a shared experience entered together — a carefully crafted arc of original music, poetry, moments of silence, and communal singing, designed to create real presence in the room. Benjamin has spent years developing this format in living rooms, yoga studios, and intimate venues across the country, and it has become the centerpiece of his live work.

People leave these evenings having sung together, sat in silence together, and felt something they didn't plan to feel. Not a show to attend — a gathering to be part of.

Ideal for: Intimate theaters · Living rooms · Listening rooms · Festival stages · Retreat centers · Spiritual communities · Arts and wellness venues
Duration: Approximately 90 minutes
Stage requirements: Flexible — works with house sound system

Workshop — Songwriting as Spiritual Practice

Available as a half-day or full-day workshop for festivals, retreat centers, conferences, and creative communities.

Drawing from his six-week course The Song Within — completed by its first cohort in early 2026 — Benjamin leads participants through a body-based, ritual-informed creative journey. Designed for all experience levels, the workshop treats songwriting not as a craft to perfect but as a practice of listening, truth-telling, and connection. Participants leave with at least one song seed of their own and a practice they can return to.
